George Washington’s Farewell Address
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were the first and the third leaders of the United States, separately and both were set up presidents in their own specific manners. In George Washington's Farewell Address he exhorted Americans to not get trapped inside remote nations' issues and clashes and to not have everlasting partnerships and bargains. Washington likewise didn't care for hosting assorted political gatherings, and he additionally focused on the size of religion and morality.Thomas Jefferson, in his first Inaugural Address expresses that a better government sick be capable than grant its residents to be respectful, and yet let them sort out themselves in what they want to do. Jefferson likewise says that all standards will never show signs of change. Despite the fact that they were both profoundly regarded and viewed to as probably the best presidents in American history they didn't generally have similar suppositions on what might be best for the developing nation. In his F arewell Address, George Washington makes reference to that Americans should mind American business and not be worried about remote clashes in light of the fact that the United States had Just won an ery costly war for their freedom and as of now owed cash to their new partner the French. This was an admonition to all Americans in light of the fact that during that time America was as yet youthful, and it had its very own large number issues to unravel. Jefferson was likewise not for engaging with remote entanglements. As Napoleon progressed into Europe, Jefferson chose to stay unbiased in the contention by prohibiting all European exchange from American Ports as a result of the British powers terminating upon the Chesapeake. As provocation from Barbary privateers started to turn into an issue Washington was ersuaded to develop an American Navvy so as to secure those in hurt and to recover the caught mariners. Thomas Jefferson's way to deal with the privateers was somewhat not the sam e as Washington's in that he decides to actualize a bar of Tripoli and other Barbary ports in 1801; these activities constrained him to reexamine his support of spending cuts for the American navy. These activities at that point permitted the American naw to get regarded by the remainder of the world, since it demonstrated that they wouldn't be pushed around by anybody. Jefferson and Washington were both for not etting associated with outside traps as they appeared through these activities and in their Addresses. George Washington explicitly tended to the issue of various ideological groups. Washington thought ideological groups and ideological group predominance were extremely awful ideas. He needed it to be about the best applicant being chosen, not around two gatherings dominating and keeping every single other gathering from having a chance of being selected. He said this since he trusted it was perilous to have power alliances emerge from these various suppositions. Jefferson and Washington both had various assessments regarding the matter of ideological groups, with Washington firmly objecting to it and Jefferson being an originator of one of the ideological groups it is sheltered to state they didn't have a similar outlook on this topic.George Washington was instrumental i n focusing on the significance of profound quality and religion. In his Farewell Address Washington that through experience strict qualities in an administration are significant. This is alluding to the fruitful European countries that have a built up religion coordinated into their administration. Jefferson concurred cap religion was significant for individuals to have the option to communicate and to have faith in unreservedly, anyway Jefferson was exceptionally vocal in attempting to cement a situation between the congregation and the state. He was himself a Christian man and set a few god-like articulations in the Declaration of Independence. Washington couldn't help contradicting Jefferson on the partition of chapel and state be that as it may, the two of them concurred religion was significant in the new country. In both of their addresses they talked about the issues including the new government, for example, the issue of making unions with different countries or getting assoc iated with remote entanglements. Both Washington and Jefferson concurred that for the country to become effective they should avoid any outside undertakings in regards to the way that the country was all the while creating and if war somehow managed to happen it would leave them increasingly vulnerable to being dominated. Every one of the exceptionally respected presidents examined the arrangement of ideological groups. Washington believed that ideological groups would pulverize the new arrangement of government. Jefferson on the opposite realized that ideological groups were inescapable; he at that point went on, with another regarded partner James Madison, to make the Democratic-RepublicanParty. The subject of religion and ethical quality was talked about incredibly in this timeframe. Washington accepted that for the administration to be fruitful religion must be associated with the entirety of the significant branches, for example, the court frameworks. Jefferson then again needed to make a ââ¬Å"wall of detachment among chapel and state. â⬠Although both of the presidents were amazingly instrumental in establishing and setting up this extraordinary country, they didn't generally concur with one another, which isn't terrible in light of the fact that to make a decent story you should have all perspectives.

Democracy in Ancient Athens and Democracy Today
While wars today are fought in the name of democracy as if democracy were a moral ideal as well as an easily identifiable government style, it is not and never has been that black and white. Democracyââ¬âwhen all citizens of a society vote on all issues and each vote is considered equally important as all othersââ¬âwas invented by the Greeks who lived in small city-states called poleis. Contact with the wide world was slower. Life lacked modern conveniences. Voting machines were primitive, at best. But the peopleââ¬âthe ones who put the demo- in democracyââ¬âwere intimately involved in decisions that affected them and would be appalled that bills to be voted on now require reading through thousand-page tomes. They might be even more aghast that people actually vote on those bills without doing the reading. What Do We Call Democracy? The world was stunned in 2008 when George W. Bush was first named the winner of the U.S. presidential race, even though more U.S. voters had cast ballots for former vice-president Al Gore. In 2016 Donald Trump beat out Hillary Clinton in the electoral college but only obtained a minority of the public votes. How could the U.S. call itself a democracy, yet not select its officials on the basis of majority rule? Part of the answer is that the U.S. was never established as a pure democracy, but instead as a republic where voters elect representatives and electors, who make those decisions. Whether there has ever been anything close to a pure and total democracy anywhere at any time is debatable. There has certainly never been universal suffrage: in ancient Athens, only male citizens were allowed to vote. That left out well more than half the population. In that respect, at least, modern democracies is far more inclusive than ancient Greece. Athenian Democracy Democracy is from the Greek: demos means more or less the people, cracy derives from kratos which means strength or rule, so democracy rule by the people. In the 5th century BCE, the Athenian democracy was made up of a set of assemblies and courts staffed by people with very short terms (some as short s a day)ââ¬âover one-third of all citizens over the age of 18 served at least one year-long term over the course of their lives. Unlike our modern enormous, spread-out, and diverse countries today, ancient Greece was a handful of small related city-states. The Athenian Greek governmental system was designed to resolve problems within those communities. The following are roughly chronological problems and solutions that led to what we think of as Greek democracy: The Four Tribes of Athens: Society was divided into two social classes, the upper of which sat with the king in council for major problems. The ancient tribal kings were too weak financially and the uniform material simplicity of life enforced the idea that all tribesmen had rights.Conflict Between Farmers and Aristocrats: With the rise of the hoplite (the Greek infantry made up of non-equestrian, non-aristocrats), ordinary citizens of Athens could become valued members of society if they had enough wealth to provide themselves the body armor needed to fight in the phalanx.Draco, the Draconian Law-Giver: The privileged few in Athens had been making all the decisions for long enough. By 621 BCE the rest of the Athenians were no longer willing to accept arbitrary, oral rules of those who lay down the law and judges. Draco was appointed to write down the laws: and when they were written down the public recognized how harsh they were.Solons Constitution: Solon (630ââ¬â560 BCE) redefi ned citizenship so as to create the foundations of democracy. Before Solon, the aristocrats had a monopoly on the government by virtue of their birth. Solon replaced the hereditary aristocracy with four social classes based on wealth.Cleisthenes and the 10 Tribes of Athens: When Cleisthenes (570ââ¬â508 BCE) became a chief magistrate, he had to face the problems Solon had created 50 years earlier through his compromising democratic reforms. Foremost among them was the allegiance of citizens to their clans. In order to break such loyalties, Cleisthenes divided the 140ââ¬â200 demes (natural divisions of Attica and the basis of the word democracy) into three regions: the city of Athens, the inland farms, and the coastal villages. Each deme had a local assembly and a mayor, and all of them reported up to a popular assembly. Cleisthenes is credited with instituting moderate democracy. The Challenge: Is Democracy an Efficient System of Government? In ancient Athens, the birthplace of democracy, not only were children denied the vote (an exception we still consider acceptable), but so were women, foreigners, and slaves. People of power or influence werent concerned with the rights of such non-citizens. What mattered was whether or not the unusual system was any good. Was it working for itself or for the community? Would it be better to have an intelligent, virtuous, benevolent ruling class or a society dominated by a mob seeking material comfort for itself? In contrast with the law-based democracy of the Athenians, monarchy/tyranny (rule by one) and aristocracy/oligarchy (rule by the few) were practiced by neighboring Hellenes and Persians. All eyes turned to the Athenian experiment, and few liked what they saw. Beneficiaries of Democracy Endorse It Some of the philosophers, orators, and historians of the day supported the idea of one-man, one-vote while others were neutral to unfavorable. Then as now, whoever benefits from a given system tends to support it. The historian Herodotus wrote a debate of the proponents of the three governmental types (monarchy, oligarchy, democracy); but others were more willing to take sides. Aristotle (384ââ¬â322 BCE) was a fan of oligarchy, saying that government was best conducted by people with the leisure to practice it.Thucydides (460ââ¬â400 BCE) supported democracy as long as there was an adept leader at the helmââ¬âsuch as Periclesââ¬âbut otherwise he thought it could be dangerous.Plato (429ââ¬â348 BCE) felt that although it was nearly impossible to impart political wisdom, everyone, no matter what his trade or level of poverty could participate in democracy.à Aeschines (389ââ¬â314 BCE) said that government works best if it is ruled by law, not ruled by people.à Pseudo-Xenophon (431ââ¬â354 BCE) said that good democracy leads to bad legislation, and good legislation is the forced imposition of will by the more intelligent.à Sources and Further Reading Goldhill, Simon, and Robin Osborne (eds). Countryside v.sCity Life free essay sample
Have you ever thought about your birth place? Do you make your own decision where to live? I believe every person, in a certain time, think about the place they should live: countryside or city? To make the best choice, we must look at three big differences between countryside and city: the environment, education, entertainment. First of all, the countryside has a quiet and peaceful environment. Since most people living in the countryside make their living mainly on farming, the atmosphere is kept fresh and healthy. They are living close to the nature with green vegetables, pure water. In the countryside, people are neither in a hurry, nor anxious. They can stay in their house until they feel the need to visit their farm. On the contrary, the city has a busy and stressful environment. Everyday city dwellers have to face with pollution by noise and smoke from a huge amount of vehicles. As a result, they are suffering more pressures than those living in the countryside. The next difference between city and countryside is education. In the countryside, there are not many high graded school, many students have to go to the big city for higher education. While schools in the countryside donââ¬â¢t provide much services for students, many schools in the big city are equipped with modern labs supporting for practice and research. Others with workshops on or off campus give the learners the best training for later work. Schools in big cities also offer many activities for low grade students like field trips and boys and girls club. In higher levels, with many exhibitions, fairs, festivals and conferences, students are much easier to do their researches. Entertainment is another concern of many people. In the countryside, entertainment is only in some physical activities: fishing, biking, hiking, swimming. These things, in fact, are only practice outside and sometime not enough for the human nonstop needs. In big cities, there are more culture activities like concerts and cinemas making the richness of mental life. Entertainment of the nightlife including casinos, clubs, hotels, recreation and shopping centers, gyms, fashion centers, contributes to the liveliness of a city, which we are hardly find in the countryside. In conclusion, both countryside and city has their own values. Therefore, people can choose living in the countryside or in the city depending on their most needs. For me, each person only has one life. We are not able to choose the birth place but we completely can choose the place to live. That is the part of reaching our most optimal peak of life. Once we look back we are proud of the happy time we have ever lived in that place.
